The CDI on my Artic Cat 500 is toast, yes I double checked everything and there's nothing else that's causing problems. Now, I can try to find an OEM one, but I'm thinking about an upgrade. Never did something like this so I was thinking about it. Any specific gains or just a waste of time?

you know, instead of just getting an OEM or a full blown performance CDI, you could look for a high quality aftermarket brand that's known for reliability and a slight performance bump without going crazy.
Check some of the Arctic Cat forums for recommendations. You'll likely find a brand that offers a solid replacement with a slightly higher rev limit that is still within a safe operating range for your engine. That's a good middle ground between a stock part and an all out performance upgrade
